It’s been a tough fall. Wow! I’ve never had soybeans out this late. However, what am I suppose to do? Soybeans were late this year and with all the rain, I’ve only had so many harvest days. One more day will clean things up, but boy, with all this rain, it makes me wonder.
The big problem I’m facing is vomitoxins in corn. The corn crop in southwestern Ontario has been seriously affected by mould. I’ve been able to harvest corn, but progress is slow. The corn industry will surely survive in this part of the country. There surely will be a lot of blended corn to make grade 2. Hopefully, we’ll see the sunshine again. This rain thing has really making things glum.
Now the good news. I’ll be appearing at the 14th Annual Southwest Agricultural Conference on January 3rd and 4th at the Ridgetown College, Univeristy of Guelph. I’ll be presenting the market outlook series on both those days. Why don’t you come out to the conference and take part in one of those market outlook segments. It’s not only corn this time, but soybeans and wheat too.
On January 9th, I’ll be in Elgin county at their corn/soybean annual meeting. I’ll be making another market outlook presentation. I often say Elgin County is “God’s country.” Hopefully by that time I’ll have these crops harvested.
Dr. A.K. Enamul Haque and attempted to do a live show on the radio November 15th in Chatham about our latest East West column. It didn’t quite work out that way as Enamul’s phone call went awry. That’s the chance you take when you are trying to get things done over a distance of 15,000 miles. Hopefully there will be many other opportunties.
I’ve now done a total of four Market Trends columns for the Ontario Corn Producers Association. You can go to their web site at www.ontariocorn.org and click on the Market Trends podcast. Yes, I’m podcasting that piece. Check it out. Let me know what you think of the price of No. 2 corn.
Everything on the web site is on going. Under the Agridome continues to be on a one week delay from DTN. At Issue is updated on Tuesday night and is published also in Cktimes.ca. The Podcasts change on Thursdays and East West is always changes the first Tuesday of every month.
Thanks to a reader from Montreal this week. Keep those notes coming. Let’s hope for some sunny, warm weather!
